Guardian Unlimited | Obituaries | Sid Luft
Garland was married to Luft much longer than to any of her other four husbands, and he was responsible for helping her return to some semblance of stability when both her life (she had made several suicide attempts) and her career (she had been fired by MGM) were at their lowest ebb.
In 1993, reinforcing people's opinion of him as an opportunist, Luft tried to auction the 1939 Oscar that Garland won as best juvenile actress for her performance in The Wizard of Oz and the replacement statuette she received in 1958 after claiming the first one was lost.
Luft was portrayed in a similar way in the 2001 television biopic based on the book.

 Gay Today: Review
orna Luft (born 1952) is the daughter of the late Judy Garland and her third husband, producer Sid Luft.
The inevitable divorce of Garland and Luft left their children at the mercy of a woman who could no longer be treated like a rational human being.
All Lorna tells us is that Joey never married (mmm!) and that, "like me, he has struggled with addiction." This is very noble but, then, dirt about Joey Luft doesn't sell books the way dirt about Liza Minnelli does.

Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows (2001) (TV)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Part of this is due to fact that Lorna Luft's memoir was, naturally enough, based on what her mother told her about her life.
Doubtlessly Luft accepted much of this as fact, but Garland was notorious for twisting the truth if it would make a good story--and consequently the film includes several depictions of events that by all other accounts didn't happen that way, assuming they happened at all.
When filming THE WIZARD OF OZ, SHADOWS shows Garland being crowded out of the shot by her co-stars, prompting director Victor Flemming to say "You three dirty hams, let that little girl in there!" It was one of Garland's favorite party stories--but it didn't happen.

The 59-minute retrospective (reduced from its original 90 minutes) collects comments from family and colleagues, shows clips from concerts at the London Palladium, Carnegie Hall, and the Palace Theater, a previously unseen 30-second scene cut from her famous comeback film, A Star Is Born, and scenes from her short-lived TV show.
Not surprisingly, some of the footage spotlights Garland's affection for her kids: she shares the stage at the Palladium with Liza Minnelli and appears with Lorna and Joe Luft at the Palace and sings to them on her TV show.
And of course, her signature "Over the Rainbow" is there, filmed from her 1955 TV special, and the only existing film of Judy as she performed her song for hundreds of concerts; sitting on the edge of the stage, singing her heart out, tears on her cheeks, in her "little tramp" outfit.
