Maxim turned pro in Cleveland at the age of 18 in 1941.
Maxim returned to the light heavyweigh ranks and on June 25, 1952, he defended his title against middleweight king Sugar Ray Robinson at Yankee Stadium.
Maxim's last stand was a win over future Hall-of-Famer and future heavyweight king Floyd Patterson on June 7, 1954 at the Eastern Parkway Arena in Brooklyn, New York.

He was nearly 28, and a veteran of 87 fights, by the time he challenged Mills for the world championship in London, where, despite being very much the underdog, he wore down the champion with left jabs and right uppercuts before forcing a stoppage in the 10th.
His days in the ring over, Maxim subsequently tried his luck as a cab driver, restaurateur, stand-up comic and film extra, and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1988.

Maxim was fighting extra-conservatively because of the extreme heat and because he recognized that Robinson was going to punch himself out.
Maxim's pace was really poor, heat or not, he was taking a risk fighting with that kind of intensity against Robinson and letting it go on for so long.
If Maxim was hoping for Robinson to tire then he's leaving himself with nowhere to go if Robinson lasted.
