Kennedy Center: Information about The Joffrey Ballet
Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino's uniquely American vision of dance first took form in 1956 with an ensemble of six strong, individual dancers who toured the country on a series of one-night stands with a repertoire of original ballets by their artistic director Robert Joffrey.
From the beginning, The Joffrey Ballet brought a new American approach to ballet, setting itself apart from other small touring companies of the time, which were, for the most part, performing reduced versions of the classics.
Joffrey co-founder and current artistic director Gerald Arpino, who was a leading dancer with the company in the early years before becoming its resident choreographer, remembers the company’s debut performance on October 2, 1956 at a 10:00 a.m.

Joffrey was born Anver Bey Abdullah Jaffa Khan Joffrey on December 24, 1928 in Seattle, the only child of a loveless marriage between a Pakhtun Afghani father and an Italian mother.
Joffrey later studied at the High School of Performing Arts in New York, and in 1949 and 1950 he danced with Roland Petit's Ballets de Paris.
Joffrey's emphasis on male virtuosity was an attempt to redress the gender imbalance that had developed in ballet, in part as a result of Balanchine's famous dictum that "Ballet is woman." Joffrey's commitment to improving the status of male dancers influenced both his teaching and his and Arpino's choreography.

Joffrey Ballet of Chicago returns to UI Hancher Auditorium for performances April 13-14
The ballet expresses the drama of a young woman who must say farewell to her lover on the eve of her arranged marriage to a man she does not love.
Founded in 1956 by Robert Joffrey and Arpino, the Joffrey Ballet was the prototype of the distinctly "American" ballet company -- rooted in high standards of classical technique, but adventurously open to contemporary styles of music and movement.
The Joffrey Ballet was firmly established as one of the "big three" ballet companies in the United States (the other two being American Ballet Theater and the New York City Ballet) when a National Endowment for the Arts touring program enabled Hancher to present the company at the UI for the first time in 1974.

UI's Thompson Reconstructs 'Petrouchka' For Joffrey Ballet Nureyev Tribute
So when the Joffrey Ballet wanted to authentically restage the Michael Fokine/Igor Stravinsky 1911 classic, "Petrouchka," for their Oct. 13-24 Nureyev Tribute in Chicago's Auditorium Theater, they knew exactly who to call: University of Iowa dance faculty member Basil Thompson, the company's former ballet master and later the artistic director of the Milwaukee Ballet.
Nureyev, who has been described as "a dear friend" of the Joffrey Ballet, was one of the most influential dancers of the 20th century and has been credited with revolutionizing the role of the male dancer.
In 1981 Thompson was invited to join Milwaukee Ballet as ballet master and for the next 19 years played a significant part in the artistic development of the company.
