Johan Barthold Jongkind comes out as an important figure of 19th-century European art in the one-man show on view at the Musée d'Orsay until Sept. 5.
The story of this son of a Dutch tax collector born in 1819 in the province of Overijssel is itself extraordinary.
Radically changing his manner, Jongkind painted that same year "The River Seine at the Pont-Royal, Pavillon de Flore." While it shares with "The Pont de l'Estacade" the taste for complex composition, the sketchy brushwork that blurs detail and the hues that blend into each other reveal another frame of mind, dreamy and soft.
