The ship, under the command of the new Governor, Johan Rising, left Gothenberg 2 Feb. 1654 and arrived at St. Christopher in the West Indies on 16 April 1654 when Skute went ashore to obtain fresh fruit and water.
Rising, however, was unwilling to allow Skute to occupy land which had been previously settled and developed by freemen for the previous decade and ultimately ruled that it was dependent on his confirmation, which he never gave.
Johan Skute, born 4 Sept. 1654 at Fort Trinity (New Castle), moved further up the Schuylkill to lands bought from the Indians by William Warner, Sr., at Nitapkung (present Fairmount Park).

The most important Swedish governor was Colonel Johan Printz, who ruled the colony under Swedish law for ten years, from 1643 to 1653.
He was succeeded by Johan Rising, who upon his arrival in 1654, seized the Dutch post, Fort Casmir, which the governor of the Colony of New Netherlands had built in 1651, on the site of the present town of New Castle.
Rising governed the Swedish Colony from his headquarters at Fort Christina until the autumn of 1655, when Peter Stuyvesant came from New Amsterdam with a Dutch fleet, subjugated the Swedish forts, and established the authority of the Colony of New Netherlands throughout the area formerly controlled by the Colony of New Sweden.

Friction had soon arisen with New Netherland, although, owing to their common dislike of the English, the Swedes and the Dutch had maintained a formal friendship.
In 1651, however, Peter Stuyvesant, governor of New Netherland, and more aggressive than his predecessors, built Fort Casimir, near what is now New Castle, In 1654 Printzs successor, Johan Claudius Rising, who had arrived from Sweden with a large number of colonists, expelled the Dutch from Fort Casimir.
The main, west or Mohawk branch rises in Schoharie county, N.Y., about 1886 ft. above the sea, and flows tortuously ~through the plateau in a deep trough until it emerges from the Catskills.

Although Rising and his soldiers left the territory on October 11, 1655, most of the Swedish settlers remained, including Morton Mortenson (the spelling of whose name has several variations, including Mortonson, Mortensson, and Martensson, among others, and which eventually became the surname Morton).
Born in Finland, a part of Sweden at the time, the date of his emigration to New Sweden is not clear but was certainly in or before 1654.

In 1643, the company expanded along the river from Fort Christina; and established Fort Nya Elfsborg on the north bank near present-day Salem, New Jersey.
In May 1654, the Dutch Fort Casimir was conquered by the New Sweden colony, led by governor Johan Rising.
The fort was taken without force because no gunpowder was present, and the fort renamed Fort Trinity.

When Johan Printz was sent to the Delaware Colony as governor, he was invested with practically unlimited power to rule the colony in the name of the Queen of Sweden.
When Papegoja, whom Printz had left in charge of the colony, became aware of their going, he hired a bunch of Indians to bring them back, but the colonists resisted and in the battle that ensued two colonists were struck down and their heads brought to Papegoja.
The great majority of the people had complaints against Printz and Rising requested them to present their complaints in writing, which they did and grave charges were made.

They complained that the Swedes had brought much evil, for many of the natives had died since their arrival into the country (probably from smallpox and other infectious diseases).
