Johan Skytte was son of the Mayor of Nyköping, Bengt Nilsson Skräddare.
In 1632, Skytte returned from Livonia and was in 1634 made president of the Göta appellate court (Göta hovrätt) in Jönköping.
Of the several schools in Sweden named after Skytte, one was actually founded on the initiative of Johan Skytte, the Skyttean school (Skytteanska skolan) which was established in Lycksele in Lapland in 1631, but moved to Tärnaby in 1867.

It is named for Johan Skytte 1577-1645, a Swedish scholar and statesman who served as governor of Finland and Livonia, founded the University of Dorpat in Estonia and served for 28 years as chancellor of the University of Uppsala.

Robert O. Keohane, an influential political scientist who recently joined the Princeton faculty, has been named the recipient of the prestigious Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science for 2005.
