Norsk Musikkinformasjon: Johan Svendsen - Biography
Johan Svendsen was the first great Norwegian symphonic composer, as well as one of the leading conductors of his day.
When Johan Svendsen ”emigrated” to Denmark, it was a severe blow to Norwegian music life, and there was a great deal of bitter talk about how poorly Norway treated her artists.
Svendsen’s instrument was the entire orchestra, which he cultivated both as a composer and as a conductor.

Johan Svendsen was an outstanding orchestra leader, and was acknowledged throughout Europe as one of the greatest of contemporary conductors.
In the 1860s, Johan Svendsen studied violin at the Leipzig Conservatory with Ferdinand David (to whom the violin concerto is dedicated).
Svendsen was thereby able to acquire an extensive knowledge of the various instruments of the orchestra, and particularly of the technique and expressive possibilities of the strings.

 Johan Svendsen String Quintet, Op.5
His father was a music teacher and Svendsen learned both the violin and clarinet from him.
All of Svendsen's chamber music was written while he was at the Leipzig Conservatory, yet these works were not then, and should not now, be considered student works.
Svendsen was regarded, by general consensus, as one of the most talented students then at the Conservatory.

If you meet him an arbitrary day at home, he is very likely to have his hands fl with oil and his head full of cunning ideas.
At night he may be playing the guitar in the band Pegasus, sleeping (and I didn't say silently) before the television, drinking coffe and chatting with others, or in some ski jumping hill as a referee.

Johan Svendsen Biography from Basic Famous People - Biographies of Celebrities and other Famous People
Johan Svendsen was a Norwegian composer, conductor and violinist.
In stark contrast to his more famous contemporary and close friend, Edvard Grieg, Svendsen was famous for his skill of orchestration rather than that of harmonic value.
Though Svendsen was at one time intimate friends with Wagner, the latter does not seem to have influenced his music, which includes two symphonies, a violin concerto, and the romance for violin, as well as a number of Norwegian rhapsodies for orchestra.

Alongside Edvard Grieg, Johann Svendsen was the most important Norwegian composer of his generation, as well as a talented conductor and violinist.
He was also on friendly terms with Wagner, who invited him to join the orchestra at the inaugural concert for his new operatic project at Bayreuth.
These two symphonies confirm that as a composer Svendsen was most accomplished, and he can fairly be described as 'the first Norwegian symphonist'.

It was the appearance of Johan Svendsen's First Symphony in 1867 that convinced fellow Norwegian Edvard Grieg to suppress his own first effort in the medium.
Svendsen's First is a remarkable achievement for its day, a superbly crafted work conservative in style but with a real breath of fresh Nordic air blowing through its four movements.
Svendsen's only problem is that he never made any further creative progress, as the Second Symphony proves.

Listening to Johan Svendsen's two symphonies, one might well be moved to think of him as a Norwegian Dvořák.
Svendsen (1840-1911) was both a contemporary and a friend of Edvard Grieg, In fact, the story goes that Grieg suppressed his sole symphony after hearing Svendsen's first effort in this genre.
As a young man, Svendsen studied at the Leipzig Conservatory, and on the basis of these symphonies, we can assume that he was an attentive and talented pupil.
