Stein's daughter, the piano builder Nannette Stein (1769-1833) and her husband, Johann Andreas Streicher (1728-1792), moved the workshop to Vienna in 1795.
The Viennese piano builder Anton Walter (1752-1826) departed from Stein's action by including the use of longer and larger hammers, a check rail, a moveable rail to adjust the escapement, and brass capsules, which were easier to regulate and allowed a freer hammer pivot.
