Johann Baptist von Spix (1781-1826), the son of a surgeon in Bavaria, Germany, received a doctorate in theology at the University of Bamburg before changing his career to medicine (M.D. degree, 1806, from the University of Würzberg).
From 1817 to 1820, traveling separately or together at different stages, Spix's and Martius's explorations in the interior of the country turned out to be one of the most important scientific expeditions of the 19th century.

n 1819-1820, Johann Baptist von Spix and Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius were engaged in an expedition to Brazil, and on their return to Europe, amongst other collections of natural objects they brought home an important set of the fresh water fishes of Brazil, and especially of the Amazon River.
Spix, who died in 1826, did not live long enough to work out the history of these fishes, and Agassiz (though fresh out of school) was selected by Martius for this purpose.
