  Fischer von Erlach
Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach's "ideal designs," imbued with the spirit of the Roman school of Baroque, had a significant influence on many architects in the eighteenth century.
In 1696, he was ennobled as Fischer "von Erlach," although probably this was not much consolation for him for the lack of commissions from the Emperor.
Fischer's strength lay primarily in the spatial design of the body of a building, while the facade of his town houses were more or less in tune with the tastes of his time.

City of the last Roman Emperors - A political manifesto: Karlskirche
The intensity of cultural, religious and political links between Vienna and Rome is most evident in Karlskirche an imposing church commissioned by Emperor Charles VI to Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach: the initial projects were submitted to the emperor in 1715 and it was completed in 1739, just one year before his death.
While the majesty of the dome is a clear reminder of St. Peter's, the portico and the two spiral columns are tributes to the monuments of Ancient Rome: the Pantheon and the columns of Trajan and of Marcus Aurelius.
The elliptical dome was entirely frescoed by Johann Michael Rottmayr, while the church was being completed: he preferred to follow the composed ceiling of Palazzo Barberini by Pietro da Cortona rather than the more frantic ceilings by il Baciccio: this is particularly evident in some joyous details.

The first part deals directly with Fischer von Erlach and his son Johann Michael (who completed and altered several of his father's buildings) and includes the results of recent research on the Josefsbrunnen, the Prunksaal and the Hofburg in Vienna as well as the Kurfurstenkapelle in Breslau (Wroclaw) Poland.
The latter part of the book deals with the nineteenth-century Neo-Baroque revival in Vienna and in particular with Albert Ilg, the author of the first monograph on J. Fischer v Erlach, who was involved in the rehabilitation of Baroque (which had fallen out of favour) as kind of Austrian national style.

Fischer's amazing collection of architectural reconstructions, imaginative re-builds perhaps based on drawings he had acquired, together with views of his own architecture, provides an excellent snapshot of the mind-set of historically-minded architects of the period - that is, just about all of them!
In essence, his work reflects a continuing interest in the idea of the paragone - namely that architects, like other artists, were in usually conscious competition with the all-time "greats" when they worked.
