Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber (1739 1810) was a German naturalist.
In 1774 Schreber began writing a multi-volume set of books entitled Die Säugethiere in Abbildungen nach der Natur mit Beschreibungen, which focused on the mammals of the world.
Many of the animals included were given a scientific name for the first time, following the binomial system of Carolus Linnaeus.

Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber studied medicine, natural history and theology, then undertook an intensive study of botany at Uppsala with the great Swedish taxonomist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) in 1758.
In 1774, von Schreber authored a multivolume set of books on the mammals of the world, Die Saugthiere in Abbildungen nach der Natur mit Beschreibungen with 755 hand-colored plates.
However, for the most part the artists had never seen he animals they were illustrating, and instead relied on written or verbal descriptions of explorers who had actually seen them in their travels.

Maximilian I Joseph sent the young botanist Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius on a Brasilian expedition from 1817 to 1820 and appointed him to a curator of the Royal herbarium after his return.

 Cat Scientific Classification
The domestic cat is now considered a subspecies of the wild cat: by the strict rule of priority of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature the name for the species thus ought to be F. catus since Linnaeus published first.
Johann Christian Polycarp Erxleben named the domestic cat Felis domesticus in his Anfangsgründe der Naturlehre and Systema regni animalis of 1777.
This name, and its variants Felis catus domesticus and Felis silvestris domesticus, are often seen, but they are not valid scientific names under the rules of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature.

Some suspect Pontes merely rediscovered a monkey called Simia flavia, named and depicted in a drawing by German taxonomist Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber in the 18th Century but never seen since.
Pontes said he had identified about 32 individuals belonging to the species in an area covering some 500 acres of forest and swamplands.
Vivo conceded that the monkey in Schreber's drawing differs from Cebus queirozi in that it lacks the distinctive white band stretching from ear to ear, but he said that may have to do with the age of the specimen in question.

 Schreber's Feathermoss
schreberi, from the Latin, "of Schreber, Schreber's", named for German botanist Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber (1739-1810),a student of Linnaeus.
Given a shady, humid, high-nutrient environment as is found on the cool, basal slopes of Black Spruce-White Spruce-Feathermoss stands, Schreber's moss is a very effective competitor against other species.
It is not until favorable edaphic conditions and a closed or nearly closed canopy is established that Schreber's moss can spread and form a continuous moss cover.

New monkey species found in Brazil claims scientist
While Pontes believes the species is new to science, others disagree.
Mario de Vivo, a primatologist at the University of Sao Paulo, said that the "new" monkey looks a lot like Simia flavia, a monkey described by German taxonomist Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber in the 18th Century but never seen since, according to a report from the Associated Press.
But conservationists warn that quick action is needed to protect the monkey's high-altitude forest home from illegal logging and hunting, or the species may soon vanish.
