  Johann Cochlaeus - LoveToKnow 1911
JOHANN COCHLAEUS (1479-1552), German humanist and controversialist, whose family name was Dobneck, was born of poor parents in 1479 at Wendelstein (near Nuremberg), whence his friends gave him the punning surname Cochlaeus (spiral), for which he occasionally substituted Wendelstinus.
Having received some education at Nuremberg from the humanist Heinrich Grieninger, he entered (1504) the university of Cologne.

In 1498, when twelve years old, he was admitted to the Heidelberg University; thence he went in 1499 to Tübingen where he received the degree of Master of Arts in 1501; then to Cologne and in 1502 to Freiburg in the Breisgau.
Together with Wimpina and Cochlaeus he represented the Catholic party at the conference (16 Aug.) between Catholic and Lutheran theologians relative to the "Confessio" and its "Confutatio"; and as theologian he served on the sub-committee which canvassed the results of the conference.

It is therefore most unlikely that Denck co-operated in drawing up the theses, or even that he gave his consent to their publication (Hege, 38-42).
The two Lutheran preachers in Worms, Ulrich Preu and Johann Freiherr, wrote seven counter theses, which they posted on the church doors and put into print at once.
At the advice of Johann Cochlaeus, who was also replying to some theses published in both Latin and German, the council decided on 1 July 1527 to banish the two preachers from the city.

 Gotthold Ephraim Lessing
His father, Johann Gottfried Lessing, was a clergyman, and, a few years after his son's birth, became pastor primarius or chief pastor of Kamenz.
The philological lectures of Johann Friedrich Christ (1700-1756) and Johann August Ernesti (1707-1781) proved, however, more attractive than those on theology, and he attended the philosophical disputations presided over by his friend A. Kästner, professor of mathematics and also an epigrammatist of repute.
His most formidable assailant was Johann Melchior Goeze (1717-1786), he chief pastor of Hamburg, a sincere and earnest theologian, but utterly unscrupulous in his choice of weapons against an opponent.

In 1533 a decree of the Scottish clergy, prohibiting the reading of the New Testament by the laity, drew from Alesius a defence of the right of the people, in the form of a letter to King James V of Scotland.
A reply to this by Johann Cochlaeus, also addressed to the Scottish king, occasioned a second letter from Alesius, in which he amplified his argument with great force and entered into more general questions.
In August 1534 he and a few others were excommunicated at Holyrood by the deputy of the archbishop of St Andrews.

 Luther's Open Letter on Translating
Second, you know that there is not a single word from God demanding us to call upon either saints or angels to intercede for us, and that there is no example of such in the Scriptures.
By "Smith" he means Johann Faber of Leutkirch (whose father was a flsmith) and by "Snot-Nose" (Rotzlöffel) he means Johann Cochlaeus ("löffel" is the German equivalent of the Latin cochlear).
Luther's quibble here is that he had used allein adverbially, and not as an adjective, so his opponents who write in Latin should use the adverbial Latin equivalents.
