Johann Elert Bode was appointed to the Observatory in 1772.
September 1846, Galle and his colleague Heinrich d'Arrest had found the planet, 8 minutes of arc away from the predicted position (they had found it because it was absent from Encke's charts).
Apparently, Galle was also the first to identify the Crepe ring (Ring C) around Saturn, in 1838, although it was forgotten and re-discovered independently a few years later.
