Topic: Johann Hari

  Johann Hari
Hari is critical of both Conservative and Labour prisons policies, claiming on the basis of reporting from several jails that rehabilitation is impossible in over-crowded prisons, and that far too many mentally ill people are incarcerated.
Johann Hari was a prominent advocate of the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
Hari has reported from the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo, sending reports from Bukavu, Sud-Kivu, as well as Kinshasa and other parts of the country.[47] He wrote that there are two stories of the war in Congo: the "official" story, and the real one.

 Johann Hari - SourceWatch
Hari has stated that he did mention them, but they were edited from the long 2000-word article to save space, a statement that has been confirmed by the Guardian.
Hari had already written an essay on March 26 for the Independent, a progressive British newspaper, entitled "Sometimes, the only way to spread peace is at the barrel of a gun", where he describes Joseph as an "ardent antiwar activist," whose beliefs were "as fervent as any menber of the Stop the War Coalition".[Lipton, op.

 Harold Pinter's artistic achievement
Hari explicitly attacked Pinter for his record of political opposition to the escalation of imperialist carnage in the Middle East and the Balkans.
For Hari, this is “depressingly revealing”; the line is an “unobjectionable platitude” and Pinter’s point is “banal.” This comes from a man who believes it impermissible to denounce the British and US governments for their actions in the Balkans and Iraq.
In particular, Hari is unable to reconcile Pinter’s early resistance to fascists in London with his subsequent critical independence.

LENIN'S TOMB: Johann Hari on George Galloway.
In fact, Hari seems to be the one in doubt of Kuwait's legitimacy as a nation, since he is the one who describes it as a "province".
Hari even uses the statement to imply that George Galloway "stood with Saddam" in his invasion of Kuwait while "conscript Iraqis" were being forced to die in an invasion they didn't support.
Hari would be well-advised to consult Hitchens' 1991 writings if he thinks the latter has been "consistently" in favour of regime-change.

Imperialist apologetics from Johann Hari Independent journalist who attacked Harold Pinter turns on World Socialist Web ...
Hari writes that “the writer—somebody called Paul Bond—simply invents a straw man position that bears very little relation to what I actually wrote, and proceeds to attack it.” He later accuses me of “hurl[ing] Serb propaganda smears” over the trial of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic and of “trying to mislead readers” on this question.
Hari’s position that the Bosnian war is somehow separable from the events in Kosovo is simply a distortion of the history of the Balkan conflict, aimed at justifying his support for imperialist military intervention and the bombardment of Serbia.
Hari quotes Human Rights Watch that the Milosevic trial is “justice for the victims of horrific crimes.” He does not, though, refer to its documentation of KLA abuses against Serb and Roma inhabitants of Kosovo, nor its observation that these were long-standing policies of the organisation.

RAPID RESPONSE MEDIA ALERT: SIDING WITH IRAQ - PART 1: Johann Hari And The Aftermath Of Invasion
At the heart of Hari's argument is the assertion that he is above all concerned for the welfare and wishes of the Iraqi people - he wants to relieve their oppression and suffering, and so supported an invasion to topple Saddam's murderous tyranny.
Notice that Hari's concern is fundamentally moral - his problem was not with Saddam Hussein as such; it was with Saddam Hussein as a cause of suffering to the Iraqi people.
And as Hari himself suggests, "If you go into a war saying you want to side with the Iraqi people, then you damn well have to carry on" working to relieve their suffering afterwards.

A mea culpa on Iraq by pro-war journalist Johann Hari
Hari now says that the violence following the occupation—violence by both the occupying forces and the contending militias—is worse than the death toll under the Baathists, and is escalating.
Hari’s support for the war was explicitly based on the premise that imperialist intervention could play a progressive role in spreading liberal democracy.
Today, Hari is somewhat cautiously opposed to military action against Iran, though late last year he was on British television complaining that the exposure of the lies about Iraq’s WMDs meant that people would unfortunately be less likely to believe Britain and the US when they warned of the real danger posed by Iran.

Hari expanded the scope of his attack, trying to fell two lefties in one swipe.
Hari concluded this to mean, “Saddam was broadly good, then, before the wicked Americans came along.” (5) The logic is flawed, a non sequitur.
Hari saw this as symptomatic of how “deranged the far left has become.” The implication is rather obvious: guilt by association.

Oliver Kamm: Johann Hari on Catholic reaction
I've been meaning for a while to comment on Johann Hari's column last month in The Independent on 'Catholofascism', by which he means the influence of the Opus Dei organisation:
Johann's views on the social influence of the Church are a caricature, with repressive pro-capitalist reaction on one side, enlightened liberation theologians on the other, and in between a Pope whose views on sexual morality are "lethally reactionary" but are counterbalanced by his position on fair trade and poverty.
If Johann looks again at the writings of these theologians (such as Gustavo Gutierrez, whom he cites) he will find some fairly uncritical assumptions about the supposed scientific character of Marxism and dogmatic assertions such as (from A Theology of Liberation) "the class struggle is a fact and neutrality in this question is not possible".

British socialist and Independent columnist, Johann Hari has not only risen to the bait, he has grabbed hold of it and ripped it to shreds in a feeding frenzy.
As well as writing for the Indie, Johann is also a regular contributor to Harry Hatchett's blog where he and his fellow travellers are forever accusing free market campaigners of holding views which are 'out of touch' and 'unpopular'.
Hari however, he was an anti-Saddam leftist with contacts with the Iraqi opposition, and wrote often against the anti-war movement.

 Oliver Kamm: Hari on Chavez
The implementation of the programme was incompetent and the military crackdown on rioters that Johann refers to was despicable.
Another point undermining Johann's morality tale is that the structural reforms, so far from being the acts of a despised regime, steadily gained support.
One of the things I like about Johann's journalism is that he calls people of varying degrees of nastiness - from the monster Saddam Hussein to the sly bigots of UKIP - by their proper names.

The Cat's Blog: Johann Hari. "Who Is This Guy?"
Hari, his many colleagues in the “liberal media” and the many disciples of these Stalinist hooligans have made of twisting and manipulating facts and logic an art, so to better denigrate those who dissent to this mockery of democracy and its servants.
If Hari couldn’t get that simple fact straight, I guess it would be too much asking him to take a simple tour on my blog and read some of my posts and replies to comments there regarding racism and anti-Semitism.
Johann Hari is the archetype of the modern ‘liberal intellectuals’ and Orwell teaches us “it is the liberals who fear liberty and the intellectuals who want to do dirt on the intellect”.

This is an entirely different matter, as Hari is commenting on the murder of Hadi Salih in the context of an imperial war that he still supports, and the main thrust of his article is criticism of the left for our alleged lack of condemnation of this murder.
Now to be charitable to Johann Hari he has perhaps not participated in the type of collective decision making that goes on in the labour movement.
Somehow Johann Hari and others received a forwarded copy of an e-mail that was distributed internally for discussion between the steering committee members and has mistaken this private and privileged communication for a public statement.

Life Matters: 22 April  2003  - God Save The Queen? Johann Hari
British journalist, Johann Hari, says that there's the possibility that the whole institution of the Monarchy could unravel because Prince William does not want the throne, and will never take it.
And he says that its time that Republicans stopped arguing their case on constitutional grounds: they should look to how the institution of the Monarchy destroys 'royal' lives and personalities.
The institution is actually, Hari argues, a system of on-going abuse for those in it.

Brimming with youthful energy, Hari said he never believed the official justification of the war that Saddam needed to be disarmed because of the threat posed by his alleged biological and chemical weapons.
He exhorted the audience to consider the many opinion polls indicating that the overwhelming majority of Iraqis were thankful for his removal and anxious for the invasion to succeed.
Hari had always thought that it was the job of the left to show solidarity with oppressed peoples everywhere.
