Froberger was one of the earliest composers who produced programmatic pieces, which he would usually include in his suites.
The structure and style of Froberger's programmatic works contributed to the development of the unmeasured prelude.
Only a few compositions were published during his lifetime, however, Froberger's music was widely spread in Europe in hand-written copies, and he was one of the most famous composers of the era.

Froberger's published output is quite small, but manuscripts survive for more than thirty harpsichord suites in a highly personal idiom.
He is accorded a prominent place in history for his early writing of established suites of dances, and for his cosmopolitan unification of the various compositional styles of the time.
Besides studying in Italy, Froberger spent time in France where he met many of the prominent composers of the time.

Froberger a sans doute bénéficié d'une formation musicale familiale et peut-être a-t-il étudié avec J. Steigleder organiste de la cour dès 1627.
Froberger obtient, après semble-t-il un premier refus, la possibilité de se rendre à Rome pour étudier auprès de Frescobaldi avec une bourse (200 Gulden) de novembre 1637 à mars 1641.
Froberger offre à l'empereur le Libro secondo di toccate, fantasie, canzone, allemande, courante, sarabande, gigue et altre partite (manuscrit), calligraphié et décoré par Johann Friedrich Sautter, un ami de Froberger à la cour du Württemberg.
