  Johann Joachim Quantz & Bach
Quantz, like a band teacher in high school nowadays, may have ‘dabbled’ with trying to learn numerous instruments between the age of 10 and 17, but he was proficient in playing only a few of them well.
Judging from the failure of Quantz as a composer to achieve the quality of compositions that came from the pens of such composers as Händel, Telemann, and Bach, there seems to be a disparity between his (Quantz’) written theories and the actual results of which he was unable to attain in his performances and compositions.
1) Quantz was primarily a ‘galant’ composer and theoretician.

Johann Joachim Quantz. | Notes (March, 2006)
If Johann Joachim Quantz (1697-1773) had not been such a brilliant theorist, perhaps we would take him more seriously as the inventive and expert composer that he certainly was.
Mary Oleskiewicz's edition for A-R Editions of seven trio sonatas by Quantz is a welcome spin-off from her doctoral thesis ("Quantz and the Flute at Dresden: His Instruments, His Repertory, and Their Significance for the Versuch and the Bach Circle" [Ph.D. diss., Duke University, 1998]).
Foremost among these is the desire to show Quantz as an expert and distinctive composer, by no means dismissible as "gallant," if by that term (in a way, as facile as the quality that it purports to describe) is meant the sacrifice of contrapuntal ambition and deep emotion.

Quantz was one of the first professional flute players in 18th-century Europe.
Quantz's Essay of 1752 is less a tutor for the flute than a compendium covering musical taste and execution on all sorts of instruments.
The tutor was written for the two-keyed flute that Quantz favored and built, using separate fingerings for sharps and flats, but he gave only brief hints on how to use these keys as he was well aware that most of his readers used one-keyed flutes.
