Kuhnau, Johann: Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
In 1684, the year before Bach was born, Kuhnau became organist at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig.
Upon the death of Johann Schelle (1701) Kuhnau became music director of the Nikolaikirche, the university, and cantor at the Thomasschule as well (in which capacity he taught both Graupner and Heinichen).
Kuhnau's keyboard works exerted a tremendous influence upon keyboard style of the period and his Neue Clavierübung was the precedent for Bach's own four volumes, the last of which contained the Goldberg Variations.

Sleeve Notes - Kuhnau: Sacred Music
Kuhnau provides us with a remarkable view of the late orthodox Lutheran conception of music, an art which is to be taken utterly seriously and which, even in its secular forms, must be written with a view to its religious and metaphysical value.
Though Kuhnau spoke out against modern operatic style in his later years as Thomaskantor (his position was, for a time, greatly threatened by the activities of the young upstart Telemann), he evidently had an interest in opera since he assisted, in his capacity as a lawyer, in the founding of the Leipzig opera house.
Although Kuhnau points to the obvious precedent of Froberger in the writing of programme music, these sonatas are the first keyboard works to present a detailed narrative verbal programme (with the exception of one sonata by Poglietti) and, as such, are virtually unparalleled before the nineteenth century.

Classical Net - Composers - Heinichen
Johann Kuhnau was in the words of Schering one of the last great cantors " in whom an element of medieval universality was evident, who mastered music, law, theology, oratory, poetry, mathematics and foreign languages." Heinichen and Graupner were the first students with musical talent to come to Kuhnau.
The court at Weissenfels was an active musical centre whose Kapellmeister Johann Phillip Kreiger (1649-1725) had studied in Italy and was regarded as one of the great composers of the period, particularly of opera and cantatas.
The solo violinist in the Sonata was presumably Johann Georg Pisendel as it is written in a most modern Italian style and in consequence unlikely to have been played by the concertmaster Volumier who was more inclined to the French style.

Amazon.com: German Cantatas Before Bach / Herreweghe, Collegium Vocale: Music   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Even Franz Tunder's cantata on Luther's famous chorale "Ein feste Burg" ("A mighty fortress is our God") seems fairly serene, without the triumphal aspect that Bach gave the tune in his Cantata BWV 80.
These works sound rather more like Schütz (a rhetorical, almost madrigalesque style) than Bach (dense counterpoint)--although Gott, sei mir gnädig by Johann Kuhnau (Bach's predecessor in Leipzig) closes with a fugal chorus that could almost pass for Handel.
Herreweghe's musicians perform as admirably as always; however, the Schütz-like text-centered quality in the music seems to suit a solo-voice consort better than 14-voice choir Herreweghe uses here.
