Johann Ludwig Bach was born near Eisenach in 1677.
Johann Ludwig spend almost his whole career in Meiningen, a small court in the principality of Saxe-Meiningen, rising in 1711 to the position of Capellmeister, a position he held until his death in 1731.
Johann Ludwig has an important place in early eighteenth-century music, because he was involved in the performance and composition of some of the earliest mixed-text cantatas of the so-called "Neumeister type." But if not for his famous cousin, posterity would hardly know about his cantata composing.

Johann Sebastian Bach was baptized at Eisenach on the 23rd of March 1685.
The rediscovery of Bach is closely connected with the name of Mendelssohn, who was amongst the first to proclaim by word and deed the powers of a genius too gigantic to be grasped by three generations.
Bach developed it in a great variety of ways, while retaining even the minor details of what in other hands had long before become its conventional form; but the one thing he did not do was to abuse it according to time-honoured custom as the staple form for opera.

 HOASM: Johann Ludwig Bach
Johann Ludwig used to accompany the visiting artists who often performed on these occasions, or he performed himself on the violin.
If the number of scores that Johann Sebastian copied fromthe works of any composer can be considered as an indication of the esteem in which he held him, Ludwig Bach ranked particularly high in his kinsman's favor.
Ludwig's cantatas in fact well deserved his Sebatian's interest: it is vigorous music, full of strength and inspiration, rich in variety, and imbued with sensuous pleasure in tonal beauty.; the treatment of the voices reveals a composer who has studied well Italian models.

classical music - andante - bachiana: music by the bach family
The most substantial works, and those that bear closest comparison to Johann Sebastian's music, are an overture and a concerto by his distant cousin Johann Ludwig Bach (1677–1731), the first member of the family to hold a leading musical position at a court.
The close relationship between the cousins is underlined by Johann Sebastian's use of 18 of Johann Ludwig's cantatas at Leipzig in 1726.
Yet it is Johann Sebastian — perhaps unfairly for his competent ancestors — who provides the real excitement here: the spectacular overture to his Easter Oratorio, followed by the opening chorus performed in an orchestral arrangement.
