Bei Besuchen in Jena, Dresden und Weimar kam er mit dem Kreis der Frühromantiker um August Wilhelm und Friedrich von Schlegel, Novalis und Clemens Brentano in Berührung und lernte auch Johann Gottlieb Fichte, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe und Friedrich Schiller kennen.
Tieck zeigte schon in seiner Jugend großes Interesse für die Werke William Shakespeares, die er später übersetzte, und trat schon früh mit eigenen Dichtungen hervor.
Im ganzen gesehen war Tieck, der auch triviale Momente etwa des Schauerromans in sein Werk mit einbezog, eine der vielseitigsten und produktivsten Dichterpersönlichkeiten seiner Epoche, die in der späteren deutschen Literatur starken Nachhall fand.
