Recollection of Rottmayr’s frescos on the stairway ceilings faded after they were covered by stucco ornamentation and the ceiling paintings of the Venetian Antonio Bellucci in the 19th century.
A sketch by Johann Michael Rottmayr in a private collection in Bergamo, long thought to have been for the “small gallery” at Schönbrunn Palace, was identified by more recent research as a sketch for the ceiling fresco in the eastern stairway of Liechtenstein Garden Palace.
Rottmayr was concerned here primarily with the composition’s execution in terms of colour, light and three-dimensional effect.

Rottmayr is considered one of Salzburg's most significant Baroque painters and one of the founders of the Austrian "Imperial style“.
The exhibition is divided into two parts: Rottmayr's early work is on display in the Bavarian town of Laufen whereas worldly and religious paintings from all of his creative periods will be shown in the Cathedral Museum.

This painting at the Residenzgalerie Salzburg is an oil sketch (modello) for the principal altarpiece in the east transept of the Kollegienkirche in Salzburg, built by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach (1656- 1723) between 1696 and 1707.
Rottmayr defined the location of the event by depicting recognisable features of the Salzburg landscape and architecture.

Originally a medieval castle, of which only the chapel has survived to this day, the residence of the court was expanded and made ever more lavish as the power of the Habsburgs grew and the territory of their dominions increased.
Michael's Wing = Michaelertrakt Although construction on this part of the palace began at the same time as work on the Imperial Chancery Wing, construction was soon halted and it was only between 1889 and 1893 that Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach's changed and modified design was executed here.

Johann Ernst Graf Thun was born on July 3, 1643 in Castelfondo (Trent) and was the stepbrother of Archbishop Guidobaldo Graf Thun.
In pursuing his career, Johann Ernst Graf Thun succeeded in becoming Bishop of Seckau at the age of 36 and was elected to the archiepiscopal throne of Salzburg on June 30, 1687 after the death of Archbishop Max Gandolph von Kuenberg.
Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach was commissioned with all of these magnificent building projects which were completed within the period of two decades.

Between 1675 and 1687–8 he was in Venice as a pupil and assistant of the Munich artist Johann Carl Loth, whose studio attracted many painters from Austria and southern Germany.
For Rottmayr, however, the rational development of the figures and the composition was less important than the overall effect achieved by the use of colour.
