 Nestroy and the Critics, 1879751976, £40.00/$60.00, 120pp, 1994
Johann Nepomuk Nestroy (1801-62) dominated the Viennese popular stage from the early 1830s until his retirement in 1860, both as an actor, and as the author of some 80 plays, mostly satirical comedies with farcical plots illuminated by virtuoso word play.
It was not until 1912 that he was 're-discovered' by Karl Kraus as a linguistic genius, and in the last 40 years the rise in his reputation has been meteoric.
The story Professor Yates traces is not just one of changing fashion, with shifts in critical judgement, but of the struggle to establish a reliable evaluation of Nestroy's stature - reflected in the many attempts to establish a definitive text of his work.

RAZZLE DAZZLE at the Minack Theatre, Cornwall, 9th to 13th June 2003
"On the Razzle" is Stoppard's version of Johann Nestroy's farce, which also served as the source for Thornton Wilder's "The Matchmaker" and the Broadway musical "Hello Dolly!".
Stoppard employs two essentials of Nestroy's play: first, the tale of two "country mice" set loose in the city for a day of illicit freedom and romance among the cosmopolitans; second, the primary business of making the play as comic and entertaining as possible.
Notwithstanding the British-flavoured insouciance of Stoppard's adaptation, it is still truer to the original plot than Wilder's, which changed Nestroy's Vienna into Yonkers and imposed a new central character, Dolly Levi, the matchmaker for whom Wilder's play was titled.

 On the Razzle
His "On the Razzle" (1981), based on "Einen Fux will er sich machen," a classic farce by 19th century Viennese actor/playwright Johann Nestroy, is less well-known.
Nestroy's farce served as the source for Thornton Wilder's "The Matchmaker" and the Broadway musical "Hello, Dolly!" Nestroy wrote in an eccentric Viennese dialect that one critic called "untranslatable, even into German" and employed abundant local references to Vienna of the 1840s and 1850s.
But he also employed two essentials of Nestroy's play: first, the tale of two "country mice" set loose in the city for a day of illicit freedom and romance among the cosmopolitans; second, the primary business of making the play as comic and entertaining as possible.
