Kathleen Hanna (ex-Bikini Kill, a.k.a Julie Ruin), zine creator Johanna Fateman, and videomaker Sadie Benning, combine their different media backgrounds with a polemic founded in community-based action and control, punk aesthetics and feminism, to create a sound that is totally unique.
Johanna Fateman: As experimental artists, what we have in common is a commitment to feminism, anti-capitalism, anti-racism and queer rights.
Johanna Fateman: I don't think that art or music can replace political activism, but I think that it can bind together a culture of resistance so that social change feels possible.

Samson, Johanna Fateman, and Kathleen Hanna give Le Tigre a powerful stage presence, built on three distinct public personas familiar in part from past achievements.
Hanna's earlier work is the best known: As lead singer of the legendary indie band Bikini Kill, she exploded her musical talents in the Pacific Northwest punk scene that took off in the early '90s.
Fateman's pre-Tigre projects, 'zines like The Oppo site part 1 (1996) and Artaudmania (1997), applied punk forms of critical discourse to official culture and hold a singular place in 'zine history by virtue of their theoretical acuity and inclusion of art criticism in a genre typically dominated by autobiography and underground music.

When the band, then composed of Hanna, Johanna Fateman (who grew up in Berkeley) and video artist Sadie Benning, released Le Tigre, it found a ready-made audience of hipsters decompressing from indie rock's defection to big labels and DIY punks thirsting for an actual "ism" to rile them up.
The album lets slide the most ecstatically political series of songs this side of Outkast, and it backs them up with drum-machine beats and New Wave guitar so catchy that Britney Spears might eat her tongue in jealousy.
In interviews, Hanna and Fateman have never shied away from a direct statement of their politics, and critics needn't apologize for them, either.

The band shamelessly revels in an almost B-52s-like level of kitsch and camp -- an early video depicts Kathleen casually reading an issue of Playgirl, which it turns out is being used to camouflage an IKEA catalog -- but these girls don't just want to have fun.
Still, it would be a mistake to paint them as separatists, worse yet to write yourself out of an eclectic, rocking show for fear of feeling something like an outsider at an ERA rally.

Punk's supposed to be offhand, rapid-fire, lo-fi, and hard to listen to, but the Frumpies take that to an extreme, with a ruthless onslaught of tuneless, meaningless, sixty-second, interchangable "songs." Full review coming soon.
Initially Kathleen Hanna recruited videomaker Sadie Benning and fanzine writer Johanna Fateman to back up her Julie Ruin tour, but then they decided to form a band.
The good side of that is, unlike BK, Le Tigre can be enjoyable even when the lyrics aren't particularly sharp ("Hot Topic," "Eau D'Bedroom Dancing"); the less good side is, they never build up the righteous fury to match their political critique: the jokey groove is easy to take, but also easy to leave.
