JohannesDuiker was born in the Hague (the Netherlands) in 1890.
This is when Bijvoet left for Paris where he associated with Chareau, the person with whom he made the 'maison de verre.' When Bijvoet left, Duiker moved to Amsterdam where Wiebenga helped him with construction for three years.
Duiker joined the architect circle 'De 8.' He became an editor of the journal 'De 8 en opbouw' in 1932 and continued to fulfil that function until 1935.
Zonnestraal Sanatorium, JohannesDuiker and Bernard Bijvoet
This is the case of Zonnestraal Sanatorium, completed by JohannesDuiker and Bernard Bijvoet in 1932.
The building was designed to house tuberculosis patients, and since the defeat of the disease the building has lost its original purpose and been left to decay.
Functionalist architects (Nieuwe Zakelijkheid or Nieuwe Bouwen) like Mart Stam (Housing in Stuttgart), L.C. van der Vlugt (Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam) and JohannesDuiker (Zonnestraal in Hilversum and Open Air School in Amsterdam) connected with the international modernist group CIAM.
A third group came out of De Stijl, J.J.P Oud and Gerrit Rietveld among them, both architects later built in a functionalist style.
The most famous Dutch painter was Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, but other painters such as Johannes Vermeer and Frans Hals are nowadays world famous as well.

These flats, too, were designed for the care of TB patients in a family setting.
After the Second World War, the founder of the sanatorium complex, Ome Jan van Zutphen (1863-1958), unveiled a commemoration plaque at Zonnestraal for the architects Bernard Bijvoet, JohannesDuiker and Gerard Holt.
Doelzicht, a private residence (since renamed Lindenhof) on Noodweg in Hilversum, was rebuilt after the war for the third time.
One side is constructed solely of large windows, which overlook a courtyard.
In the twenties JohannesDuiker designed the Zonnestraal, a building that was to be constructed almost totally out of glass and that functioned as a sanatorium for the chronically ill in a forest area near Hilversum (NL).
There has always been an interest by architects to integrate plants and exotic gardens into the architectural structure.
