Professor Doctor Johannes Martin Bijvoet (1892-1980) was the successor of Ernest Cohen and held the Chair of General Chemistry at Utrecht University from 1939 until his retirement in 1962.
Bijvoet's intense general interest in chemistry led to the introduction of several subjects in the curriculum and to the start of new research projects, many of which have resulted in the establishment of independent chairs.
Bijvoet was Member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, Foreign Fellow of the Royal Society (London), Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and Member of the Belgian Royal Academy.
