Johannes Ockeghem was born in the Netherlands, possibly in Hainaut.
Johannes Tinctoris, leading theorist of the time and active in Naples, dedicated his Liber de natura et proprietate tonorum (1476) to Ockeghem and Busnois and named Ockeghem as the most famous musician of his time in the prologue to his Liber de arte contrapuncti (1477).
Ockeghem's output is better characterized by other works, which demonstrate his rhapsodical, asymmetrical melodic style and a general avoidance of pervading imitation.

The death of the Franco-Flemish musician Johannes Ockeghem, one of the great composers of the 15th century, on 6th February 1497 brought a stream of poems and laments in his honour.
Ockeghem's pupils, among whom apparently all the great composers of the period belong, Josquin, de la Rue, Brumel and Compére, were invited to compose laments for him and met this request, Josquin even with his absolute masterpiece.
In spite of that here he stands among his singers, with glasses on his nose, the great, thin and consistently unerring master, reminding the observer that he was in his time almost as well known for his glorious, deep bass voice as for his unique language as a composer.

In those instances where Ockeghem brings attention to cadences through a diminution of note values and punchy syncopated rhythms, The Clerks’ Group exerts a rhythmic clarity that is thrilling to the ear and stylistically revealing to the intellect.

Despite his influence, Ockeghem's music resembles that of no other composer.
Though the individual strands of his polyphony are "nearly equivalent to each other in speed, floridity, and function, individual lines are subordinate to the total effect of the interplay among all voices." The scholar Reinhard Strohm describes his "Alma redemptoris" as a "masterwork of pure vocal music, without any motivic, imitative or even modal artifice."

 Ockeghem by David Norman Bower
Master Johannes Tinctoris, professor of law and arts, in one sentence cites sir Johannes Ockeghem as "the most celebrated teacher of the art of music", and "most illustrious man" but later goes on in the same letter to criticize him for wrongly using signs of proportion, "Proportionale Musices".
On the other hand, of all the disciplines to which we might apply a deterministic approach, the theory and analysis of music has necessarily become more complex (and thereby it could be said that our methods are improving), and presumably we are able to discern more closely the structure and organization of composition.
He may not have had as much depth as Ockeghem, nor Busnois's subtlety and taste for intricate polyphony, but the clarity of his writing is remarkable.

The corner stone of Johannes Ockeghem‘s (1417-1497) inspiring and difficult to define music is an extraordinary balance between hidden mathematical constructions and the apparently spontaneous melody lines which they help construct, but which nevertheless remain unexpected.
Ockeghem is a composer who brings to completion the musical thoughts of an epoch, leading to a counterbalancing by the following generation who preferred more transparent paths.
For singers of today‘s discernment, Ockeghem‘s works make such unusual demands that their performance is considered a test of courage.
