Johannes Secundus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Johannes Secundus (also Janus Secundus) (15 November 1511 25 September 1536) was a Neo-Latin poet of Dutch nationality.
Secundus was a prolific writer, and in his short life he produced several books of elegies, epigrams, odes, verse epistles and epithalamia, as well as some prose writings (epistles and itineraria).
The 'Basia' are really extended imitations of Catullus (in particular poems 5 and 7) and some poems from the Anthologia Graeca; Secundus situates his poetry, stylistically as well as thematically, firmly with the Neo-Catullan tradition.

The chief authority for his life is Tacitus, according to whom Secundus was a man of refinemnt and brilliant intellect.
Quintilian asserts that he was far superior to any writer of tragedies he had known, and Tacitus expresses a high opinion of his literary abilities.
Secundus devoted much attention to the niceties of grammar and style, on which he was recognized as an authority.

JOHANNES SECUNDUS - LoveToKnow Article on JOHANNES SECUNDUS
His father intended him for the law; but though he took his degree at Bourges it does not appear that he devoted much time to legal pursuits.
After quitting the service of the archbishop, Secundus was employed as secretary by the bishop of Utrecht; and so much did~hedistinguish himself by his compositions that he was called upon to fill the important post of private Latin secretary to the emperor, who was then in Italy.
But, having arrived at St Amand, near Tournay, he died of fever on the 8th of October 1536.

Secundus furthers the early-modern Catullan revival by composing an extremely influential collection of erotic verse inspired by Catullus's basia-poems, and to this extent the Catullus favored by Secundus is clearly miles apart from the one honored by Martial.
In short, Secundus would seem to have understood that "Fieri sentio et excrucior" might as well be the motto of the Petrarchan tradition.
Secundus is much taken by the idea that lovemaking - and kissing in particular - can lead to something like an out-of-body experience.

The paradigm-setter, in terms of neo-Latin re-readings of Catullus--and perhaps, as Gordon Braden has argued, in terms of English re-readings, too (213-214)--is Johannes Secundus.
The best Secundus can offer in that regard is a poem in which he insists he is not writing about penises ("Nulla hic carmina mentulata"
Although Secundus's life is largely consumed by the "excrucior," his verse proclaims the "fieri sentio." In line with this emphasis, Secundus pitches his vocabulary, too, in a distinctly Catullan register--although once more a register typical of Catullus's amatory, rather than his satirical, poetry.
