Johannes Virolainen, one of the most influential post-war Finnish political figures, died this morning in hospital in Lohja.
Virolainen was born in the Viipuri Rural District, in what is now Russian Karelia, in January 1914 and was among those obliged to leave their homes in 1944 when Finland ceded the area to the Soviet Union as part of the armistice arrangements.
Johannes Virolainen held a doctorate in agriculture and forestry science, and was granted the honorary title of Counsellor of State in 1989.

A member of the Agrarian League (later the Centre Party), Virolainen was a Member of Parliament 1945-1983 and 1987-1991.
