Johannesburg - The City of Johannesburg had abandoned plans to sell off or enter into a long-term lease for the R160 million Johannesburg Stadium because it had failed to secure a satisfactory offer, Phindi Mzimande, the project manager, said yesterday.
She maintained that the city would have to "sit with the stadium and market is usage extensively" in attempt to recoup some of the costs.
The stadium complex boasts an olympic-sized swimming pool, a world-class running track, consisting of a nine-lane Regupol synthetic track and a six lane warm-up track, as well as a huge property adjacent to it.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Thousands of activists have gathered in Johannesburg for an alternative forum to the Earth Summit, which will press world leaders to stick to agreed targets and implement plans to save the planet.
The so-called Global Forum will be launched on Friday in a Johannesburg stadium at a ceremony that will include speeches by South African President Thabo Mbeki and performances by African music icons such as Mali's Salif Keita and Nigerian Femi Kuti.
The Johannesburg meeting comes a decade after the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, which set out goals for environmental protection in a deal since undermined by a lack of enthusiasm, particularly among wealthy nations.
