He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." (Jesus) said to him, "Feed my sheep.
The threefold confession of Peter is meant to counteract his earlier threefold denial (John 18:17, 25, 27).
The same expression is used in John 19:22 of Pilate, who certainly would not have written the inscription himself.

John 20:30-31 then state the purpose of the gospel and would have served as an adequate conclusion if there was, in fact, a 20-chapter edition of John's gospel.
Perhaps John meant to explain that at the sound of her voice Mary "was converted" or turned from the old life to her new life in Christ.
John 16:13-14 had clearly stated that the Paraclete would not speak on his own, but would take the words and ministry of Jesus and apply those words and ministry to the believers' lives.

In the Greek, the dosing words of this verse are identical with those found at the end of John 20:14: "and [Mary] knew not that it was Jesus." She was immersed in sorrow, occupied with death, and she recognized not the Savior.
In the interval between Matthew 14 and John 21, he had basely denied his Master; but in the interval, too, and after the denial, he had heard His "Peace be unto you," and, plainly, this reassuring word had been treasured up in his heart.

For which reason, also, Peter in the Gospel is asked three times whether he loves the Lord, that by the threefold answer the bonds of the guilt he had contracted by denying the Lord might be loosed....
When Peter began to inquire about John (which he would have reason to do if he were to be his supreme pastor), Jesus told him in essence that it was not his concern what John was to do (verse 22); but Peter's responsibility was to follow Christ.
Rather than placing the entire Church, including John, under Peter's pastoral care, Jesus was telling Peter to take heed to his own walk with the Lord, and let the Lord watch out for John.

At the opening scene of John 21, the disciples went fishing the whole night at the sea of Tiberias and caught nothing.
Jesus said in John 6:53, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you." First, this scripture on eating the flesh of Jesus is unique among the gospels.
John went into great length about eating His flesh and drinking His blood in chapter six whereas in the Synoptic gospels the Lord only spoke briefly on eating His body at the Last Supper.

As we came to the end of John chapter 19 we learned that Jesus really died and that His lifeless body was placed in a garden tomb (John 19:33-42).
John chapter 21 gives us the account of the THIRD resurrection appearance that Jesus made to His disciples as a group (see John 21:14).
As things turned out, John did outlive all of the other Apostles and died as an old man. John lived many years longer than Peter did, but both of these men were faithful servants of Christ and God used both of these men in special ways.
