John Allen Muhammad - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John Allen Muhammad (born John Allen Williams on December 31, 1960) is an American spree killer.
Identifying Muhammad led to the discovery that he had purchased a former police car in New Jersey on September 11, 2002, and a lookout broadcast to the public on that vehicle resulted in his arrest when it was spotted parked in a Maryland rest area on Interstate 270 by two alert citizens.
Muhammad was charged with murder, terrorism, conspiracy and the illegal use of a firearm, and faced a possible death sentence.

Muhammad fathered at least five children with three different women in his life, but it was the last three, the ones he had with Mildred, with whom he felt most bonded.
It was Muhammad's polite demeanor, excessive to the point of phoniness; it was his smoothness and businesslike air; it was the big duffel bag that he carried with him everywhere; it was his soldierly control over the young Malvo; most of all, it was the trips he took to the East Coast, Louisiana, the Caribbean.
Muhammad's side of the story, as told to his then-wife Mildred, was that after he was accused of the attack, he was hogtied and humiliated by his fellow soldiers in a way that he would never forgive or forget.

Muhammad's attorneys asked the judge to drop charges against him -- or at least drop the death penalty from consideration -- because Law Enforcement leaked information about the case to a pair of Washington Post reporters, Sari Horwitz, Michael E. Ruane, for their book Sniper: The Hunt for the Killers Who Terrorized the Nation.
Muhammad's defense: There is no evidence that he did any of the shootings; and in fact Lee Malvo allegedly confessed to having been the triggerman in most if not all the shootings.
Malvo is not likely to testify at Muhammad's trial (citing the Fifth Amendment) and is expected, during his own trial set to begin next month, to claim that he'd been brainwashed by Muhammad and wasn't responsible for his actions.

WorldNetDaily: Sniper link to al-Fuqra probed
Sniper suspect John Muhammad fits the profile of a disaffected outcast who becomes increasingly radicalized under the influence of Islamism, say terrorism analysts and investigators, who suspect he is connected with the radical Islamist group, al-Fuqra.
According to Christian M. Weber, contributing editor for Soldiers for the Truth, an organization headed by Col. David Hackworth, Muhammad seems to follow the model of John Walker Lindh, Richard Reid and Jose Padilla – men exposed to Islamism who become disenchanted with the movement's pace and progress and who take the road to jihad.
"As one traces John Muhammad's life from his conversion to Islam in 1985, to his joining of the moderately militant Nation of Islam, to his deadly shooting spree in October 2002, his steady radicalization becomes readily apparent," writes Weber.

John Allen Muhammad :: Converts to Violence?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
October 25, 2002 -- IT came as no surprise to learn that the lead suspect as the Washington, D.C.,-area sniper is John Allen Muhammad, an African-American who converted to Islam about 17 years ago.
From the 1940s onward, NoI's longtime leader, Elijah Muhammad, told his followers "You are not American citizens" and he spent years in jail for draft evasion during World War II.
This well-established pattern of alienation, radicalism and violence among fl American converts to Islam suggests two points, should John Allen Muhammad in fact be implicated in the D.C. sniper attacks.
