In 1803, the Ames Shovel Company was established and became nationally known as having provided the shovels which laid the Union Pacific Railroad and opened the west.
The most notable of the Ames family were Oakes Ames, a key figure in the Crédit Mobilier of America scandal, and Oliver Ames(R), governor of Massachusetts from 1887 – 1890.
The Ames family shaped the town's economy, and was responsible for the presence of a number of landmark buildings in the town designed by H.

Peddling his pen-and-ink sketches he sold his first work in 1886 to John Ames Mitchell's Life magazine.
He became editor of Life after the death of Mitchell in 1918 and eventually owner.

 A Tour of Unity Church
To the left of the bust is a memorial to Oliver Ames (1779-1863), founder of the North Easton shovel empire that financed the church and several other buildings in town.
The east window, LaFarge's largest was commissioned by botanist Oakes Ames (1874-1950) and his cousin, the Broadway play producer, Winthrop Ames (1870-1934) in memory of their grandfather, Congressman Oakes Ames, and their fathers, Governor Oliver Ames and Oakes Angier Ames.
The memorial to the left of the church entrance is to Sarah Ames Witherell (1814-1886), sister of the donor of the church.

He made the rounds of all the magazines and publishers, both large and small - he had good business sense - with no success, until finally in the fall of 1886 he managed to sell, for four dollars, a small drawing of a dog chained to his doghouse, baying at the moon.
The purchaser of this work was Life magazine, at that time an influential humor publication edited by John Ames Mitchell, an artist himself.
Although he thought Charles' work was crude, he saw the "honesty and courage" in it, which led him to give Gibson guidance and then more work - for the next thirty years.

I suppose that the author is John Ames Mitchell (1845-1918), artist, novelist and editor of Life magazine from 1883 to 1918.
What a pity that works like this - especially if the translation is as good as you say - have disappeared.
I have three different anthologies of American literature but Mitchell doesn't get a mention in any of them.
