John was born in Ulster, Ireland about 1720, and settled in Virginia about 1740-50.
"John NICKELL b.1728 in Gortin, Lower Bedomy, Ulster, Co. Tyrone, Ireland d.bef Aug 14, 1774 on Moffett's Creek, Staunton, Augusta Co., VA. His 400 acre farm was about 10 miles north of present day Staunton." Link to an off site Web Page for detailed information.

John William Anglin (May 2, 1930 - June 11 or 12, 1962?) was an American criminal who escaped from Alcatraz along with his brother Clarence and Frank Morris on June 11, 1962.
John and Clarence Anglin -- who were considered loud-mouthed and hot-headed -- were both excellent escape artists, and they managed to weave their way out of most prisons.
John Anglin was the second to know about the plan; for about two years he chiseled the ventilator grill at the back of the cell he shared with his brother.

 05-10-2004 - Anglin Fought At Battle Of The Bulge
John Anglin, from Atwood, was a squad leader during World War II with the Cannon Company of the 311th Infantry Division.
Anglin, as squad leader, transferred coordinates from forward observers on the cannon and directed the other five members of the team.
Anglin said the Germans were surrendering by company after the division moved into the Ruhr Valley.

Indenture 26 March 1806 between Drury and Olive Spurlock and John Payne, all of Lee Co., VA for sum xxxxx for 137 acres on Stock Creek and near Wagon Road and against claim of William McCulhin and Nathaniel Taylor.
The defendant by his attorney moved the last Court to set aside the verdict and judgement obtained against him in cause at the last Court and to grant him a new trial there on and contained bill this which motion for reasons appearing to court is over ruled.

 Alcatraz
None were known to be successful, although the bodies of Frank Lee Morris and the Anglin brothers, Clarence and John, were never found.
Their 1962 attempt was the source of perhaps the most famous Alcatraz movie, Clint Eastwood's Escape from Alcatraz.
Walking through the cellhouse, I was able to see the cells in which Morris and the Anglin brothers carved their escape routes, complete with the masks they placed in their beds to fool the guards during nightly security checks.

 Famous Escapes
July 31, 1945 - In one of the most ingenious attempts, John Giles was able to take advantage of his job working at the loading dock, where he unloaded army laundry sent to the island to be cleaned - over time, he stole an entire army uniform.
Several weeks later a man's body dressed in blue clothing similar to the prison uniform was found a short distance up the coast from San Francisco, but the body was too badly deteriorated to be identified.
December 16, 1962 - John Paul Scott and Darl Parker bent the bars of a kitchen window in the cellhouse basement, climbed out, and made their way down to the water.
