John Augustus Conolly was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
He was 25 years old, and a Lieutenant in the 49th Regiment (later The Royal Berkshire Regiment - Princess Charlotte of Wales's), British Army during the Crimean War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.
On 26 October 1854 at Sebastopol, the Crimea, an attack by the Russians was repulsed and the enemy fell back pursued by men of the 49th Regiment, led by Lieutentant Conolly, whose gallant behaviour was most conspicuous in this action.

John Conolly was born on 30 November 1829 in Ireland.
In the attack by the Russians against the position held by the Second Division, 26th October, 1854, Major Conolly, then a Lieutenant in the 49th Regiment, while in command of a company of that Regiment, on outlying picket, made himself most conspicuous by the gallantry of his behaviour.
Lieutenant Conolly was highly praised in General Orders, and promoted to the Coldstream Guards, as a reward for his exemplary behaviour on this occasion.

Conolly was building an obelisk opposite a vista at the back of Castletown House, and that it would cost £300 or £400 at least, and she wondered how she could afford it.

Private Duffy, however, who went out with two others, managed to fasten a rope to the gun in such a manner that it could be pulled away and was saved from falling into the hands of the enemy.
On 16 November 1857 at Lucknow, India, Lance-Corporal Dunlay was the first man of the Regiment to enter one of the breaches in the Secundra Bagh, with a captain whom he most gallantly supported against superior numbers.
During the same evening he saved the life of a quartermaster-sergeant by cutting off the head of the sepoy who had just bayoneted him He is also said to have twice saved the life of a major who was being attacked by sepoys.

 Hisotry of the Coldstream Guards
The next foreign service of this battalion was in Portugal in 1827 and in Canada in 1838; and it represented the regiment in the Crimea, earning for its list of honours the names of Alma, Sebastopol, and Inkerman, where a few hundreds held the redoubt against thousands.
This campaign won the Victoria Cross for Privates Stanlock and Strong, and for Brevet-Majors Gerald Littlehales Goodlake and John Augustus Conolly, the latter being promoted from the 49th into the regiment for his "exemplary behaviour on the 26th October, 1854".
There John Maskell did well and became cornet player in the band, whence the officers of the Coldstream Guards took him into their own band as a drummer.

 Berkshire Regiment
It was one of the earliest regiments in the Crimea, was present at the battles of the Alma and Inkerman, and shared in the siege of Sevastopol and the desperate fighting of the assaults on the Quarries and the Redan.
In 1882 it formed part of the army despatched to Egypt; did not accompany the rest of the army to Ismailia, but assisted in the capture of Kafr-ed-Dauar.
, resolutely led by Conolly in frequent short, sharp charges, he himself engaging several of them in hand-to-hand fight, one after another, till at length, from loss of blood, he fell insensible, and had to be borne off the field.
