John Austin (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
John Austin is considered by many to be the creator of the school of analytical jurisprudence, as well as, more specifically, the approach to law known as “legal positivism.” Austin's particular command theory of law has been subject to pervasive criticism, but its simplicity gives it an evocative power that cannot be ignored.
Austin's analysis can be seen as either a paradigm of, or a caricature of, analytical philosophy, in that his discussions are dryly full of distinctions, but are thin in argument.
For example, one occasionally sees Austin portrayed as the first “realist”: in contrast both to the theorists that came before Austin and to some modern writers on law, Austin is seen as having a keener sense of the connection of law and power, and the importance of keeping that connection at the forefront of analysis.

JOHN AUSTIN (1790-1859), English jurist, was born on the 3rd of March 1790.
Although Austin had failed to attain success at the bar it was not long before he had an opportunity of exercising his abilities and in a manner peculiarly suited to his particular turn of mind.
But Austin thought, and in this no doubt he differed from Bentham, that the mass of the people did not know their own interests so well as "an aristocracy of independent gentlemen" who might be trusted to provide for the wants of all classes alike.

John Austin Biography | Dictionary of Literary Biography
John Austin is widely recognized as the father of English jurisprudence.
Analytic jurisprudence is the logical elucidation of the concepts of law and legal system and of fundamental legal concepts such as right and duty; with the exception of Bentham, no one in England before Austin had engaged in such a systematic and theoretical investigation into the nature and foundation of law.
Legal positivism (not to be confused with philosophical or logical positivism) is the view that law in the proper sense of the term is limited to "positive," or actually existing, law--that is, law laid down by competent political authorities.
