John remained a member of the show until departing at the age of 19 to attend college at Murray State University.
In 2004, John Austin hired an "A-team" of the finest studio session musicians from the 60s and 70s Nashville recording era, rented Cinderella Studios in Madison, and recorded, mixed and mastered his album, "Country as Cornbread." John noted that the studio was fully analog, lending the recordings a vintage, classic country sound.
John Austin said that one of the perks of being an entertainer is being blessed with the opportunity to meet many of his musical heroes.

Discovered in a Chicago songwriter's competition in the early 1990's, John Austin recorded his first album, The Embarrassing Young, with the legendary Mark Heard.
However, on the eve of an international tour, John was jumped by a street gang in Chicago and beaten with a baseball bat.
Over the next several months, as he recovered from his injuries Austin was dropped from his record label and his mentor/friend/producer, Mark Heard, died of a heart attack.

From the opening lines of the title track, a listener unfamiliar with Austin's previous work might well wonder, "What do you mean, if he was a Latin king?" as he croons over a foundation of Spanish guitar, strings, and waves of cymbal crashes.
Austin has painted a picture of these neighborhoods that celebrates the good but doesn't shy away from reality.
Austin knows firsthand about the darkness in these songs, having been brutally assaulted by members of the Latin Kings several years ago.
