Keane was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1994 and his condition had deteriorated in recent days.
Keane spent several childhood summers with relations in the nearby Stack Mountains where, he said, he was "half-reared, half-dragged up and countrified".
John B. Keane will be buried in Listowel.

John Brendan Keane (July 21, 1928–May 30, 2002) was an Irish playwright, novelist and essayist from Listowel, County Kerry.
He was the son of William B. Keane and Hannah Purtill, and was educated at Listowel National School and then St Michael's College, Listowel.
He worked as a chemist's assistant between 1946-51, and had various jobs in the UK between 1951 and 1955 - he was a pub owner in Listowel from 1955.

The son of a schoolmaster, Keane left St Michael's College, Listowel, to work, from 1946 to 1951, as a chemist's assistant, a post in which his chief duty was preparing ointment for the Earl of Doneraile's piles.
Besides plays, Keane also produced a series of epistolary squibs, such as Letters Of A Successful TD (or member of the Irish parliament) and Letters Of A Love-Hungry Farmer, which ridiculed those who seek respectability in the mistaken belief that they are acquiring dignity.

He served at Bombay, India, in 1833-'9, and then was intrusted with the operations in Afghanistan, of which the capture of Ghuznee in Cabool was his greatest achievement.
