John Baez, Clifford algebras and Hestenes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
On Sep 17, 1996, John Baez wrote in sci.math.reseach: > There is a bit of a "personality cult" around Hestenes and his work, > which tends to force one to be "for it" or "against it".
John Baez seems to have a narrow view of research carried out on Clifford algebras, limited to activities of David Hestenes and his followers at Cavendish laboratory in Cambridge.
Hestenes and his followers do have a part in that success, but Baez exaggerates their role: much of success of Clifford algebras is due to other researches.

John Baez: John had been playing the prototype on Newgrounds.com for a few months at work when he met Dan Paladin.
When it became apparent that their company was going to downsize, John came up with the idea of forming a company which made collectible console games and proposed to Tom and Dan to make Alien Hominid the first title in the series.
In John's mind, it really wasn't a question of IF Alien Hominid would be made into a console, but when and by whom.

John Baez: Yes, and that point was brought up to us over and over as we pitched the game to publishers.
John Baez: Well, since we just finished a great 2D game without a tall, beautiful warrior babe with a nice rack running around half naked in thong, I guess that'd be my damsel in distress.

The definition of temperature(Gerald L. Hurst)
I'm sure John is usually right, but in the context of a definition of temperature in the post in question it would appear he was in fact simply wrong in the specific area to which I called attention (Boltzmann constant).
John's definition was a humdinger, but hardly suitable for the vast majority of students learning to use science and mathematics as a map for the physical territory those students have trod but not understood to any degree.
If we were to adopt the simpler definition, which John first suggested T = dE/dS, a basic restatement of the second law at the expense of teaching the historical ideal gas approach, we would simply create even vaster hoards of semiliterate scientists and engineers who could regurgitate but understand not at all.

John Baez - of the University of California at Riverside - who says he received many copies of this email from numerous individuals - was naturally puzzled by this and apparently wanted to get the issue out in the open.
As a leader in the internet physics community, John seems to have felt that if the Bogdanov's were innocent of the rumors, the best way to deal with it would be to publicize the matter by bringing it up on an internet newsgroup frequented by physicists and mathematicians.
The first public post on the subject is by John Baez of the University of California at Riverside.

 World Mysteries - Voynich Manuscript
Accompanying the manuscript was a letter that stated that it was the work of the Englishman Roger Bacon, who flourished in the thirteenth century and who was a noted pre-Copernican astronomer.
The manuscript somehow passed to Jacobus de Tepenecz, the director of Rudolph's botanical gardens (his signature is present in folio 1r) and it is speculated that this must have happened after 1608, when Jacobus Horcicki received his title 'de Tepenecz'.
A possible link between Rudolph and Bacon is John Dee (an English mathematician and astrologer, collector of Bacon's work) who visited Rudolph's court in 1582-86.
