John Ball Park is a large urban park and zoo located on the west side of the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan in the U.S. The John Ball Zoo is contained within John Ball Park.
The original land for the park was donated to the city by noted pioneer and explorer John Ball upon his death in 1884.
The John Ball Park and Zoo were operated by the City of Grand Rapids until 1989, when the park, known as a regional asset because of the zoo, was sold to Kent County, Michigan.

John Ball Park became the official name and the City purchased the land surrounding the original 40 acres to increase its size to 140 acres.
In 1989, the County purchased the Zoo and the Park.

First - additions to your list for an ideal dog park - several of the many sites I have visited in the past suggest that a fee be charged for 'admission' to the dog park - typically $5 to $10 for the first family dog (with a reduced fee for the second family dog).
It is the largest park in the city, and is not surrounded by residential buildings as most of the other parks are.
Someplace like John Ball Park might be a nice central location, but it is visited by people throughout the city, thus increasing the likelyhood of serious opposition being generated as the result of proposing a park there.

Also, parking is always free, yet sometimes it is in the mud.
Just recently, John Ball was on the ballot to be moved to an area over by Meijer Gardens and of course, Fred Meijer was in on this relocation project...
I do like that the zoo is set in a park where you can enjoy a picnic lunch and on the days the zoo isn't free, it's not very crowded.

Though the park and zoo is in an urban area, the City of Grand Rapids, Michigan, the city sold the park and zoo to Kent County for $1 over 13 years ago because they could not afford to keep up the zoo.

I usually park at the eastern end of the trail by the strip mall at the intersection of Cascade and 28th Street.
The closest place to park right now seems to be at Rogue River Park in Belmont - take 131 N to Post Dr, and head east to Belmont, then turn left and you'll see the park on your left.

Staff at Mecosta County Probation and Parole has chosen to use their lunch hour to volunteer with the elderly from the Senior Meals Center at the Parkview Assisted Living Apartments in Big Rapids.
As a special project the residents of Parkview Apartments are allowed to select an outing and the residents picked the John Ball Zoo Park in Grand Rapids.
They were able to raise a total of $360 to pay for 20 seniors to spend an afternoon at the John Ball Park Zoo and to go to lunch.
