He then drummed for the Mojos (1964-66), John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (1966-67) and the Jeff Beck Group (1967).
Staying with the band until late 1978, he was eventually fired in very acrimonious circumstances, with the resultant lawsuits flying all over the place in the following few years.
Staying in San Francisco, he joined Jefferson Starship on the suggestion of ex-Zappa bassist Pete Sears, replacing the hospitalised John Barbata, at the same time as Mickey Thomas replaced Marty Balin.

Barbata has played the skins for some of the biggest acts in rock history: The Turtles, Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
One of Barbata's favorite memories is what he calls "the night the lights went out in Georgia." He was backing Johnny Rivers at the Atlanta Pop Festival right after Lynyrd Skynyrd left the stage.
Suddenly there was a power outage, so Barbata decided to take an extended drum solo for the 150,000 people flicking their Bics for light.

Born in 1917 in Beaver Falls, PA, "Papa" John Creach began playing violin in Chicago bars when the family moved there in 1935, and eventually joined a local cabaret band, the Chocolate Music Bars.
Papa John Creach died in February 1994 at the age of 76.
By the time of the band's last studio album "Long John Silver", he was involved in a great many other projects, and only appears on two songs.

Long John Silver by Jefferson Airplane
Not only would Long John Silver (1972) be the second project minus co-founder Marty Balin (vocals), who left after Volunteers (1969), but Joey Covington (drums) also split before the long-player was completed, forming his own combo, the short-lived Black Kangaroo.
Even more so than on their previous platter, Bark (1971), the material featured on Long John Silver rather blatantly exposes the two disparate factions to have emerged from the once unified Airplane.
Quite possibly the heaviest selection on the package is the Slick/Kaukonen co-composition "Eat Starch Mom." Appropriately, it concludes the effort on a positive charge with the Airplane hitting on all cylinders before landing the craft (for all intents and purposes) the last time.

Of course long gone are Marty Balin, whose energetic vocalizing was once this band's most vital sign of life, and drummer Spencer Dryden, whose speed and puissance was often the backbone of the more thrilling Airplane sets.
Their replacements, David Freiberg and John Barbata respectively, do their jobs adequately and without any panache whatsoever.
Jack and Jorma are still one of the toughest lead-bass units to be heard in rock, and their taut and airy jammery is topped by John Creach's shrieking amplified fiddle, one of the more original and viscera-churning noises to grace improvisatory pop music.

Bark and Long John Silver were released on the band's own label, Grunt, with Joey Covington on drums and "Papa" John Creach on fiddle, after which the group effectively disbanded as Casady and Kaukonen converted their side-project Hot Tuna to a full time band.
In 1974, the Airplane was formally reborn as Jefferson Starship, with Kantner and Slick as charter members; Balin came on board in time to record the hit single "Caroline" for the first Jefferson Starship album, Dragon Fly.
This line-up, which also included late-Airplane holdovers drummer John Barbata, fiddler Papa John Creach, and bassist-keyboarder-vocalist David Freiberg, along with Pete Sears, also playing bass and keyboards, and guitarist Craig Chaquico, proved to be the band's most commercially successful so far, although some Airplane fans were less than happy with its more mainstream direction.

Probably the greatest and most obscure supergroup album, combining the talents of a core group of Joel Scott Hill (guitar/vocals), the Flying Burrito Brothers' Chris Ethridge (bass/piano/vocals), and The Turtles' Johnny Barbata (drums).
Hill's blue-eyed soul vocals on such rockers as 'It's Your Love' and Dr. John's brilliant, New Orleans-soaked 'Craney Crow' clearly attest to his sheer genius.
Perhaps the album's crowing achievement is a version of Booker T. Jones' slow and smoky gospel/blues workout, 'Ole Man Trouble,' which is aided by the songwriters' Hammond organ performance and a sterling background vocal arrangement.
