John Bassett, second son of John the settler, was a farmer and school-teacher.
Bassett Creek, flowing through the village area of Golden Valley and the city of Minneapolis, was named for Joel Bean Bassett, an early settler and lumberman, who was born in Wolfborough, N.H., March 17, 1817, and died in Los Angeles, Calif., February 1, 1912.

Bassett organized the Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Company of Galax, Grayson County, and the United Furniture Company of Lexington, North Carolina, besides which he is a large stockholder i nthe American Furniture Company of Martinsville, these connections marking him as the largest furniture manufacturer in the South, if note the largest in the United States.
Bassett have been born four children: William McKinley Bassett, the eldest of the children, was graduated from the Bassett High School and Blackstone Academy, and thereafter continued his studies in Richmond College and Randolph-Macon College, besides completing a course in the National Business College at Roanoke.
