The John Bates Clark Medal is awarded biannually by the American Economic Association to "that American (An expert in the science of economics) economist under the age of forty who is adjudged to have made a significant contribution to economic thought and knowledge".
Around 50% of past Medal winners have gone on to win the more frequently-awarded Nobel, following an average wait of over 20 years.

The way he could always think through any problem from an economic point of view was very impressive.
The other person who was probably equally impressive is Kevin Murphy, also a professor at the GSB and winner of the John Bates Clark Medal.
After thinking about this a little more, and reading this post by John Battelle and its links, I understand the need for a separate narrow search a little better.
