The Bauer troll lives in a distinct world that is consistent from picture to picture, from fairytale to fairytale and is often telling a much more interesting story that the actual stories Bauer was commissioned to illustrate.
Bauer's world is always set up as at stage with a clearly separated foreground and background and often framed by trees.

John Bauer executes each of his works with a limited palette of gloss and matte fls, silver and chrome.
Through Bauer's repetitive and serial forms, emotive narrative distance and his detached processes of working, he gains a subjectivity that expands the definition of what makes a painting formally successful while walking a line between beauty and disjuncture which stems from the communication of an overwhelming urban experience.
Bauer decentralizes the picture plane with grid-like modular units, denying the accessibility of spatial illusion; he furthers this with his limited palette, encouraging a hierarchical breakdown between positive and negative space where compositions both dissolve and rematerialize simultaneously.

Merging the authentic signifiers of abstraction, the reproducibility of pop, and the graphicness of design, John Bauer's canvases set up planes where visual language is refracted, confused, and reconstructed into disjointed, antagonistic compositions.
Executed with a limited palette of gloss and matte fls and metallic silvers, Bauer's paintings possess an imposing elegance, their flat decal-like surfaces are coded within the glamour of industrial design and the holographic sheen of futurism.
Through Bauer's densely overlapped patterns, translucent layers, and emotive distance, the impersonal characteristics of digitized imagery and his detached processes of working gain a unique subjectivity infusing the seamless and generic with a contemplative aura of personal negotiation.
