Bellingham was certainly born in St Neots, Huntingdonshire and later brought up in London where he was apprenticed to a jeweller, James Love, at the age of fourteen.
Bellingham was tried on Friday May 15 at the Old Bailey where he argued that he would have preferred to kill the British Ambassador to Russia, but that he was entitled as a wronged man to kill the representative of those he saw as his oppressors.
In 1997 one of Bellingham's opponents was Roger Percival, a descendant of Spencer Perceval.

He is a descendant of John Bellingham, the assassin of British Prime Minister Spencer Perceval in 1812.
One of his opponents at the 1997 election was Roger Percival, a descendant of Perceval (Perceval was a candidate of James Goldsmith's Referendum Party).

As the "History of Anthony Coombs" shows him to have had a son John Coombs born Mch 18, 1699, and his descendants have not been fully traced, it is claimed by many that he was the father of John Coombs, the Ancestor at Bellingham, Mass.
This theory is somewhat strengthened by the fact that John Coombs, son of Ancestor Anthony Coombs, m at Rochester, Mass., Jan 9, 1723 Lidia Wooding.
John Coombs b 1724; d Feb 12, 1791 (67 yrs.); he died in Vermont and is buried there.

For his defence, Bellingham read a long statement in which he said that his attack was aimed at the office of Prime Minister and not the person occupying the post.
Bellingham then went on to say that he had been robbed of his liberty for years, ill-treated, torn from his wife and family, robbed of all his property and everything that had made his life valuable.
John Bellingham was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death by hanging.
