Topic: John Bevis

John Bevis (1695-1771)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Bevis is reported to have observed an occultation by Venus of Mercury on May 28, 1737, and observed and found a prediction rule for eclipses of Jupiter's moons.
Bevis is one of only two persons in Britain who are known to have observed comet Halley on its first predicted return in 1759: He observed it on May 1 and 2, 1759 after its perihelion; the other British observer, also physician, was Nicholas Munckley who saw it on the same dates.
John Bevis died on November 6, 1771 at age 76, from injuries received in a tragic accident when falling from his telescope.

George Glazer Gallery - John Bevis Celestial Prints - Lyra
These prints were designed in the 1740s by John Bevis, a British physician and astronomer who made important celestial observations and was eventually elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1765.
Bevis' images, based on the earlier celestial atlases by Johannes Bayer (1603) and John Flamsteed (1729), surpass both those works in the quality of the artwork and scientific accuracy.
Bevis’ atlas was announced for subscription in 1748 as Uranographia Britannica, updating and improving the accuracy of information provided in earlier atlases by Bayer and Flamsteed, and with plates designed to be easy to consult at the telescope.

 Manchester Astronomical Society Press Release
Bevis intended publication of his Uranographia Britannica in about 1750 and had obtained subscriptions and private donations from many UK and European notables to finance the fifty-two elaborately illustrated plates.
Had Uranographia Britannica been published in 1750 it would have ranked as one of the great illustrated celestial atlases of the seventeenth and eighteen centuries alongside those of Bayer, Hevelius, and Flamsteed at a time when celestial cartography and positional astronomy was in its heyday and of great scientific and practical importance.
John Bevis died in 1771, but in 1786 the sets of star charts printed in 1749 were bought at the auction of Bevis's library following the death of his executor, James Horsfall.

Bevis, Uranographia, 1750   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Although many astronomers praised the Flamsteed atlas for its accuracy, others were unhappy with the unwieldy size and inelegant plates, and this dissatisfaction is made evident by John Bevis's decision in 1745 to publish a new English star atlas, and to base it on Bayer, rather than Flamsteed.
Bevis succeeded in having the plates engraved for his atlas, and even managed to have a star catalog printed.
But the bankruptcy of his printer resulted in the plates being sequestered by the courts, and the Bevis Uranographia, as it was to have been called, was never published.
