John Beynon profile   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-23)
Peaceful in stature and attitude, John Beynon and his wife acted with the kind of warmth that one might hope for after a long, exhaustive journey to the top of a mountain.
Beynon recalled being received in North Vietnam warmly as a U.N. member when “there were only two Americans at that time in Saigon: myself and Jane Fonda.” Among his accomplishments, Beynon has spent time working with the Ford Foundation, and is co-president of the U.N. Association in Boulder County.
Beynon is quick to point out that there are two schools of thought when it comes to war-torn countries: One school agrees that the warlords of the world need to be removed; the other sees that removing a dictator creates chaos that may be even more difficult to control.

The stories that Wyndham sold before the war, the ones as Beynon or Beynon Harris, were not particularly well executed and were of their period, not giving much idea of what the writer might later become capable of producing.

John Wyndham (July 10, 1903 - March 11, 1969) was the pen name used by the apocalyptically oriented British science fiction writer John Beynon Parkes Lucas Harris.

 BBC - h2g2 - John Wyndham - Writer
John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris was a prolific writer of novels and short stories, all published under variations of his name.
John Beynon, Lucas Parkes, Wyndham Parkes, John Beynon Harris and Johnson Harris were all called into service as a nom de plume at various points during his writing career
Wyndham's position within the literary canon is a variable one, for at times he has been admired for writing science fiction which appeals beyond the normal readership for the genre, while some critics dismiss his major novels as 'cosy catastrophes' with little depth or insight and thus easily dismissed.

Mimosa 27, pages 20-21. "Interplanetary Travel -- At Last?" by Fred Smith
Beynon has his five-man crew (plus one girl stowaway!) travel by rocketship and the journey does take about three months.
The problems of radiation and weightlessness would, of course, be unknown to John Beynon at the time, but he does acknowledge the pressures of close confinement over a lengthy period by introducing conflict between the engineer and the rest of the crew -- mainly due to the stowaway!
(John Beynon's novel, on the other hand, is set in 1980, so top marks for vision there.) Voyage relates the sequence of events from 1969 up to the launch, mixing factual history with fiction and real characters with invented ones, and interspersing the long, detailed story with snippets of the actual flight.

John Wyndham's full name is John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris.
The most famous adaptation of Wyndham's work is The Village of the Damned, the 1960 film of his novel The Midwich Cuckoos; director Wolf Rilla delivered a fabulously eerie, claustrophobic film that quickly became a sci-fi classic.
A 1995 remake by John Carpenter, set in the US, substitutes grisly violence for clammy atmosphere, and loses much of the original's subtlety as a result.
