  John Blake Rice - Wikipedia
John Blake Rice (born: May 28, 1809; died: December 17, 1874; buried in Rosehill Cemetery) served as mayor of Chicago, Illinois (1865-1869) for the Republican Party.
Rice arrived in Chicago in 1847 to work as an actor and entertain the politicians at the River and Harbor Convention, Chicago's first national convention.
Rice and the City Council were connected with graft, prostitution and gambling, and he was defeated by Roswell B. Mason in 1869.

Raised in Southern California, Rice inherited his musical skill from his father, who played with several West Coast bluegrass bands and was heavily influenced by California-based bluegrass groups, including the Dillards [+] and the Kentucky Colonels [+], which featured influential guitar picker Clarence White [+].
Moving temporarily to Kentucky in 1970, Rice became a charter member of the Bluegrass Alliance [+], one of the earliest contemporary bluegrass groups.
Rice has continued to interpret the traditional bluegrass repertoire as well, releasing an album of old chestnuts, Plays and Sings Bluegrass [+], the same year.

Call it what you will: Rice’s building was the first to house a permanent theatre company in the city, a company that included James H. McVicker, later to open his own famous downtown playhouse.
Patrons en route to Rice’s theatre made their way on muddy, unpaved roads; planks were laid down on the major thoroughfares in 1849, but they kept breaking and splashing mud on people.
Rice would go in for any actor who didn’t show up for a performance, and would always throw a cloak over his head and run on stage for mob scenes.

While Seth Mnookin did go out of his way to note Tony Rice's amazing work on this album, he, like a lot of reviewers, couldn't help but frame the review around the playing of Jerry Garcia.
The fact is, on the "Pizza Tapes," Tony Rice unrelentingly schools Garcia.
I hope "The Pizza Tapes" will inspire others to check out Tony Rice's music -- his albums with Norman Blake ("Blake & Rice" I and II) and solo albums like "Cold on the Shoulder," "Manzanita" and "Church Street Blues" are all incredible and, certainly outside of bluegrass circles, underappreciated.
