Bright publicly deprecated the popular tendency to regard Cobden and himself as the chief movers in the agitation, and Cobden told a Rochdale audience that he always stipulated that he should speak first, and Bright should follow.

John Bright was his son by his second wife, Martha Wood, daughter of a tradesman of Bolton-le-Moors.

Bright was a member of the Peace Society and denounced the Crimean War (1854-56) as un-Christian, contrary to the principles of international free trade, and harmful to British interests.
Bright was satisfied with the household franchise introduced by the 1867 Reform Act, which extended the vote to skilled urban artisans but still excluded the town and country labourers.

Statesman John Bright has issued an address to his constituents, giving his reasons for opposing home rule, which will hardly exert much influence on the contest now.
It does not argue the matter at all, but simply states, what was already well known, that Bright distrusts the Irish, and thinks that they are better governed by the Imperial Parliament than they would be by a Parliament of their own.
Bright has long ceased to be a power in politics, but he has a great name, which is associated inseparably in the minds of all voters over fifty with the most glorious traditions and achievements of the Liberal party.

A staunch laissez-faire capitalist, and, with Richard Cobden, a bastion of the Manchester school of economics, he resented the protection given to landholders by these laws at the expense of manufacturing interests.
After the repeal (1846) of the corn laws, Bright’s principal concern was parliamentary reform, which he pursued relentlessly until passage of the third Reform Bill in 1884.
A member of Parliament for Manchester (1847–57), he lost his seat because of his opposition to British involvement in the Crimean War, which he considered un-Christian and against Britain’s economic interests.
