Broadwoods were one of the twelve largest employers of labour in London, in an industry that was still craft-based with all parts made in-house.
Broadwood craftsmen formed their own band, conducted by Mr Sullivan of the Royal Military School of Music, whose son Arthur played the big drum (to be the musical partner in Gilbert & Sullivan).
Broadwood patent for improvements in the metal frame, leading to the 'barless' concert grand, with overstringing (despite challenges from Germany and America).

Broadwood's sales records still exist, and they show his first sale of a square piano on 12 December 1778, to a 'Mr Rice' about whom nothing more is known.
Soon after this John Broadwood's distinctive brass dampers were abandoned in favour of a new wire-operated type, invented by William Southwell of Dublin.
John Broadwood died in 1812, aged 79, but the workshops continued under the direction of the two sons.

Honestly speaking, most people who are looking to buy pianos these days are looking for modern pianos and by that I mean that even a mid 1870's Steinway or mid 1880's Bechstein when properly rebuilt qualify as fully modern pianos.
In Washington state, there are any number of builders from the good restorers to the "one percenters;" those who aren't satisfied until they can make the perfect piano from some old relic.

The sound of Kirckman and Shudi harpsichords has impressed many listeners, but the feeling that it overpowers the music has led to very few modern instruments being modeled on them.
The Shudi firm was passed on to Shudi's son-in-law John Broadwood, who adapted it to the manufacture of pianos and became a leading creative force in the development of that instrument.
German harpsichord makers roughly followed the French model, but with a special interest in achieving a variety of sonorities, perhaps because some of the most eminent German builders were also builders of pipe organs.
