washingtonpost.com: Episcopal Bishop to Bless Gay Priest's Union in Md.
Bishop John Bryson Chane, head of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, plans to formally bless the longtime relationship of a gay Episcopal priest and his partner next month at a ceremony in Maryland.
Chane decided to officiate at the ceremony because he believes covenant relationships, in which two people have committed themselves to spending their lives together, "are holy and deserve to be blessed, deserve to be held up by the community and they deserve to be called what they are: sacred," said James Naughton, Chane's spokesman.
Chane, whose views on gay unions were known to the diocese when it elected him bishop in January 2000, appointed a committee -- co-chaired by Hopkins and the Rev. Susan N. Blue, rector of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Northwest Washington -- to write a liturgy for the Washington diocese.

Chane says that Akinola threw his prestige behind the law that infringed upon press and religious freedom by authorizing Nigeria's government to prosecute newspapers that publicize same-sex associations and religious organizations that permit same-sex unions.
Chane invokes the archbishop's support for this law which, he says, violates numerous Anglican Communion documents that call for a "listening process" involving gay Christians and their leaders.
Chane touts the Robinson consecration as a model of Episcopal tolerance, but recent events in that bishop's life reveal deep duplicity over his self-acknowledged alcoholism and withdrawal from public and ecclesiastical life embarrassing his followers and the Episcopal Church House of Bishops.

Chane's group, first formed some 40 years ago, is influenced by the timeless sounds of Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf.
As for the vast difference between the blues and the ministry, Chane says the essence of music shares something with that of religion: Both are nearly impossible to capture in mere words.

Finally, Chane warns that if IRD succeeds in renewing the churches, what is happening in Nigeria today will happen in the U.S. tomorrow.

Dhimmi Watch: Dhimmitude in the Episcopal Church
The Right Reverend John Bryson Chane, DD, Episcopal Bishop of Washington and Dean of the Washington National Cathedral, last week preached a televised Christmas sermon that was so breathtakingly brimful of theological confusion and pandering dhimmitude that I am breathless as I type this.
This kind of silliness is not a viable road to the genuine harmony, peace, equality, and justice that Chane longs for.
Instead, it's the road to dhimmitude: now that he has publicly affirmed Muhammad as a prophet, Chane could easily be pressed by Muslims to discard what may remain of his Christian faith — or else accept dhimmi subservience in the name of the peace he covets.

[Faith-talk] Heresy in the Cathedral: Bishop Chane's Christmas Message
In a twisted form of theological imagination, Bishop Chane identifies the Angel Gabriel as "the same miraculous messenger of God "who was instrumental in the establishment of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam." From this argument the bishop went on to call upon his congregation to aim for global peace, religious harmony, and social progress.
In Bishop Chane's view, taking the Bible as the inerrant and authoritative Word of God "is a recipe for disaster." He pointed to Mel Gibson's soon-to-be-released movie, The Passion, as evidence of such dangers, simply because of Gibson's effort to portray the Gospel accounts.
Bishop Chane identifies the gospels as "blatantly anti-Semitic" and also claims that they are "incorrect translations of the events that they describe." This is altogether different than arguing that a particular translation from the ancient texts is in error.
