The old soldier was John Murray, who, at the Battle of Te Ranga in New Zealand over forty years before, had shown, with such terrible effect, just how good a bayonet fighter he was, when he saved the life of John Byrne VC and gained for himself the Victoria Cross.
The Maoris were brave and skilful soldiers and on 29th April, a mixed British force of soldiers and sailors attacked Gate Pah (a Maori fort of trenches and wooden stockades), whilst the 68th Regiment waited behind the fort to prevent any escape.
The London Gazette announced the award of the Victoria Cross to Sergeant John Murray on 4th November 1864 'for his distinguished conduct", [Citation] it was presented to him at Wanganui on 5th December 1865 by Brigadier-General Waddy, whilst the Regiment was still in New Zealand.

Byrne has stated his major influences on his art style are Jack Kirby, Gil Kane, Steve Ditko, Neal Adams, as well as the style employed in the British comic The Eagle.

John Byrne VC The Secretary and two members of the Association visited Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny from 14th to 17th October (at their own expense), and participated in the unveiling of a plaque honouring John Byrne VC DCM, the Regiment's first VC.
The village of Castlecomer was the birthplace of John Byrne and many of his descendants attended the ceremony.
We also visited the Eglish (sic) cemetery at Derrinlough, Co. Ofally where John Murray, our second VC, was buried with full military honours in 1912.

I was really bummed when I learned John Byrne was leaving the book, but kept buying it for way too many years afterward, through all that damned Brood nonsense, the Storm-gets-a-Mohawk phase and more convoluted plotlines than I care to remember.
Byrne on the FF (the first time around, with [Joe] Sinnot inks) coupled with Uncanny X-Men 121 (the first Alpha Flight) made me a lifelong comic fan.
John Buscema was a big influence and his brother Sal actually helped me get my foot in the door up at Marvel.
